Katherine ‘Kat’ Lee, a young woman thrust into a world without the convenience of electricity, relies on the indigenous teachings of her grandfather for her own survival in this savage world. But she carries guilt from the loss of her entire family and home, as well as the actions she’s taken to stay alive – things Kat believes can never be forgiven.

Yet hope comes from an unexpected source when she volunteers for The Civilian Forces. A government program offering food, protection, safe shelter, and a chance to build a new future. Kat quickly learns the only way to truly survive the chaotic and brutal bands of scavengers, hunters, and killers is to rely on the training offered by two Special Op soldiers, Lieutenant Quinn and Sergeant Marcus. Both are hardened dedicated Marines tasked with training an inexperienced and fragmented group of Pacific Northwest young men and women how to work as a team and to survive in this new dystopian world.

In this story of desperate reality, sanity is pushed to the limit, there is no room to wallow in failures. Every selfish desperate act has consequences in an environment that contradicts itself across every landscape. What starts as a rigid mentorship becomes a yielding to unity – for Kat as well as her commanding officers – as military tactics and survivor skills lead them to understand that even in this hellish place, love and forgiveness are the true keys to surviving the demons they each carry beyond the call of duty.
